In 1980 Okemah was formed by Derry Grey, Giovanni Persoglia & Doc John Delanoy as a trio. The band's name is the birthplace of Woody Guthrie (he was born in Okemah, Oklahoma in 1912 and died in New York City in 1967). Derry and two former band members played together with son Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton and other US musicians at the 1st Woody Guthie Folk Art Festival in Oklahoma in July 1998 (see also "Festival 1998 USA").

3rd place in the 1985 PopOdrom final, winner of the Austrian Country Music Masters in 1991, "Country Breakers" of the CMA Netherlands in 2nd place after an Italian musician and ahead of Paddy O'Brien from Ireland (whom Derry is friends with and also brought him to a concert in Styria). With a US single at number 21 on the New York state country charts. Three USA tours and one Ireland tour.

Derry Grey, Doc John Delanoy & Desmond Doyle have released more than 20 records, two of them in the US. Concerts at home and abroad (USA, Ireland, former GDR, Bavaria, Northern Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland). Okemah's songs have been played in more than 25 US states, as well as in some European countries. PowerAirplay on Ö3 with the Okemah hits "Reggae baby" and "Mississippi steamboat" 1990. More than 20 TV appearances.

About 80 of Okemah's own compositions have been released in addition to numerous other songs. 2012 Live CD with Ulli Baer & Sir Oliver Mally. In 2017, Okemah performed 9 times live at the Donauinselfest (the largest festival in Europe with up to 3 million viewers) from 1992 to 2017.

Okemah has performed in the US with Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton, Kevin Welch, Peter Keane, Don Conoscenti, Jimmy La Favre, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Ellis Paul, the Red Dirt Rangers, Joel Rafael, Tom Skinner, Bob Childers & Billy Bragg. At festivals in Austria together in the program with Fairport Convention, the Dubliners, Pogues, Loudon Wainwright, Dave Dudley, the Wild Geese, Ed Bruce, Barry & Holly Tashian, the Whites and many more. Several appearances by Derry Grey with Peter Ratzenbeck and Colin Wilkie. Studio recordings with Philadelphia-based Saul Broudy (ex-partner of "City of New Orleans" composer Steve Goodman) and Irish band "Spailpin".

Two concerts in Austria in 2012 with Arlo's daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie and husband Johnny Irion. One of them in the Metropol, where "Kurt Ostbahn" Willi Resetarits, Ernst Molden and Hans Theessink also took part. Two extremely interesting evenings were "Klezmer meets Gospel" in 2016 and 2017. Okemah together with the London blues lady Betty Semper (Viennese Ladies), Aliosha Biz and Alexander Shevchenko.

Okemah play Irish & American Folk, Old Time, Country, Blues & Gospel in rock or acoustic versions. Many songs also exist in dialect versions (Styrian & Viennese). Derry now lives in Vienna, Doc John Delanoy in Sandwich in England, Desmond Doyle is Irish and Mandy Oberle is Swiss, but both live in Austria. Other band members in Vienna and Styria. Okemah is also available as a trio for clubs, pubs, the Beisl scene in Vienna, exhibitions, etc.

Derry's work with exceptional guitarist Mandy Oberle can be heard on the album "Songs from the south/Traveller 69" which was released on October 19, 2020 on Amazon & Spotify. In the February/March 2021 issue, the album received the rating "Very Good" (4 stars) from the well-known Austrian music magazine "Concerto".

The anniversary concert finally took place, 2 years late, on May 31, 2022 in the sold-out Leobner Congress. As the main concert of the Leobner Musikverein.

Okemah play several concerts in a formation of 6 in the Simon Mühle. Lead vocals Derry Grey, Doc John Delanoy & Desmond Doyle. The last as a summer special in June 2023, see pictures under News.

Okemah sind aus der Folkband "Jamhouse" hervorgegangen. Jamhouse existierte von 1974 bis 1979. Es gab auch ein gemeinsames Konzert mit dem noch solo agierenden "Schiffkowitz" (später STS) und Ross Murphy. Nicht auf der Bühne, sondern an den Reglern damals Gerd Steinbäcker, der mit Derry Grey Jahre zuvor die Schulbank im Grazer MuPäd "gedrückt" hatte. Zwei der Jamhouse Mitglieder gründeten 1979 "Shamrock", die allerdings nur zwei Jahre bestanden und Derry Grey und Giovanni Persoglia spielten kurzzeitig als Folk Duo weiter (Auftritt mit Jack Grunsky).

1980 wurde dann Okemah von Grey & Persoglia mit Doc John Delanoy als Trio gegründet. Der Name der Band ist der Geburtsort von Woody Guthrie (er wurde 1912 in Okemah/Oklahoma geboren und starb 1967 in New York City). Derry und zwei ehemalige Bandmitglieder spielten im Juli 1998 gemeinsam mit Sohn Arlo Guthrie, Tom Paxton und weiteren US Musikern beim 1. Woody Guthie Folk Art Festival in Okemah/Oklahoma (siehe auch unter Menü "Festival 1998 USA").

Okemah wurden erstmals von einem größeren Publikum wahrgenommen, nachdem sie Konzerte im Rahmen der "Steirischen Kulturinitiative" von 1981 bis 1984 gaben. Im Programm gemeinsam mit Opus, EAV, STS, dem Schotten Hamish Imlach, Sawoff & Brandau und Hans Theessink.

1985 im PopOdrom Finale auf Platz 3, Sieger beim Austrian Country Music Masters 1991, "Country Breakers" der CMA Niederlande auf PLatz 2 nach einem italienischen Musiker und noch vor Paddy O'Brien aus Irland (mit dem Derry befreundet ist und ihn auch zu einem Konzert in die Steiermark holte). Mit einer US Single auf Platz 21 in den Countrycharts des Staates New York. Drei USA Tourneen und eine Irland Tournee.

Derry Grey, Katie Kern & Okemah haben mehr als 20 Tonträger veröffentlicht, zwei davon in den USA. Konzerte im In - und Ausland (USA, Irland, ehemalige DDR, Bayern, Norditalien, Slowenien und Schweiz). Die Songs von Okemah wurden in mehr als 25 US - Bundesstaaten gespielt, sowie in einigen europäischen Ländern. PowerAirplay auf Ö3 mit den Okemah Hits „Reggae baby“ und "Mississippi steamboat" 1990. Mehr als 20 TV Auftritte, u.a. noch mit dem schon verstorbenen Hansi Lang (Checkpoint Live) und Peter Ratzenbeck (Die stille Show).

Von Okemah sind neben zahlreichen anderen Songs etwa 80 Eigenkompositionen veröffentlicht worden. 2012 Live CD mit Ulli Bäer & Sir Oliver Mally. 2017 waren Okemah zum neunten mal live beim Donauinselfest zu sehen gewesen. Seit 2018 gibt es die Bühne in der Brigittenauer Bucht (angeblich aus Kosten - und Sicherheitsgründen) leider nicht mehr.

Okemah gemeinsam mit der aus London stammenden Blueslady Betty Semper (Viennese Ladies), Aliosha Biz und Alexander Shevchenko. Literarisch-musikalische Abende mit der schon verstorbenen "Dialekt Poetry Slam" Legende Günther Tschif Windisch, "Trautmann" Wolfgang Böck und Erich Schleyer.

Okemah spielen Irish & American Folk, Old Time, Country, Blues & Gospel in rockigeren oder acoustic Versionen. Viele Songs existieren auch in Dialektversionen (Steirisch & Wienerisch). Derry lebt heute in Wien, Doc John Delanoy in Sandwich in England, Desmond Doyle ist Ire und Mandy Oberle Schweizer, beide leben aber in Österreich. Weitere Bandmitglieder in Wien und der Steiermark. Für Clubs, Pubs, die Beisl Szene von Wien, Ausstellungen u.a. gibt es Okemah auch als Trio.

Derry's Arbeit mit dem Ausnahmegitarristen Mandy Oberle ist im Album "Songs from the south/Traveller 69" zu hören, das am 19. Oktober 2020 bei Amazon veröffentlicht wurde. In der Ausgabe Februar/März 2021 erhält das Album vom bekannten österreichischen Musikmagazin "Concerto" die Wertung "Sehr gut" (4 Sterne).

Das Jubiläumskonzert hat endlich, 2 Jahre verspätet, am 31.5.2022 im ausverkauften Leobner Kongreß stattgefunden. Als Hauptkonzert des Leobner Musikvereines.
